Creative Writing Contest

Three winners, one each in the genres of Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Poetry, will receive a $1,000 award toward attendance at the 2017 Writing Workshops in Cork, Ireland or Brunnenburg Castle, Italy. The contest is open to graduate, undergraduate, and non-degree seeking students.* Submissions due by January 6, 2017 at 11:59 pm (Central Time Zone).

Writers may submit:

  • Fiction: 5,000 words or less, double-spaced, 12 point font
  • Creative Nonfiction: 5,000 words or less, double-spaced, 12 point font
  • Poetry: up to 3 poems totaling 7 pages or less, double-spaced, 12 point font

No excerpts will be accepted.  If submitting a piece from a larger work, it must stand alone. All submissions will be considered for publication in Bayou Magazine.

UNO was ranked as one of the Top 25 Underrated Creative Writing MFA’s in the country, and Creative Writing Director M.O. Walsh was recently named one of Entertainment Weekly’s“25 Stars on the Rise for 2015.”  The Low Residency MFA program can be completed in just over two years for approximately $25,000,* including tuition and fees for three summers abroad.

* Award is not transferable or redeemable as cash, and must be used in 2017.  $25,000 is based on current University of New Orleans tuition and fees.
